How pan conversion is calculated
Swapping a recipe from one pan to another comes down to a single number: how much bigger or smaller the new pan is. This calculator works that out from the surface area of each pan — the footprint the batter spreads across. A round pan's area is π times the radius squared, a square or rectangular pan is just length times width, and standard muffin tins and Bundt pans use fixed area values. Divide the target pan's area by the original's and you get the recipe multiplier: a value above 1 means you'll need more batter to fill the new pan, below 1 means less.
Area works as the basis because most pans are built to a similar depth, so the footprint is what actually changes how much batter you need and how it bakes. The place to be careful is depth: move a recipe from a wide, shallow pan into a narrow, deep one and the batter sits much taller, which makes the outside set long before the center cooks through. When the calculator detects that kind of swap it flags it, and the fix is to lower the oven temperature by about 25°F and add 15 to 20 minutes, checking the center with a toothpick before pulling. Whenever the area changes meaningfully, treat the original bake time as a starting point and watch the pan, not the clock.
